Recognizr – Mobile Face Recognition Application
You’ve seen it in futuristic movies and now it’s here. Recognizr is an application that lets users point an Android smartphone at a person and instantaneously view their online presence. It premiered last week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Developed by The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), the new technology allows users that opt into the service and submit a photo to the computer-vision program. If I point my phone at you, Recognizr scans your face, sends a 3-D model signature to a server which matches the face to a photo in its database, and sends back the name along with social media links, including your Facebook, Skype, Linkedin and Twitter account (oh yeah, sh*t is real).
In addition to the aforementioned online services, the app will also associate the face with profile pictures in your contact lists. It’s still early in the app’s life cycle but it appears the program will only recognize people if they use the app too. Like Layar and Yelp for the iPhone, Recognizr is part of an exciting trend of augmented reality apps on smartphones. This category is gearing up to be one of the most innovative over the next few years.
Check out the Recognizr demo video below and look for the app to hit the Android Market in the next few months.
The future is now. I can only imagine what they can REALLY do with this type of technology. I know you know what I mean…
There is a powerful tension in our relationship to technology. We are excited by egalitarianism and anonymity, but we constantly fight for our identity. – David Owens
